Initiative Explained

California law gives citizens powerful tools to pass laws, overturn laws and recall politicians at the local and state levels.

The Calaveras Local Fire Protection Tax Initiative uses the petition process to put a proposed law before voters. In March, 2023, the petition will be ready to begin circulation. The proponents then have six months to gather enough signatures to place the measure before voters. To qualify, the petition must receive at least 2,124 valid signatures. That number is equal to 10 percent of the number of ballots cast in Calaveras County during the last gubernatorial election in 2022.

If the petition receives enough valid signatures, it will go to the ballot as soon as the March 5, 2024 Primary Election.

If a majority of Calaveras County voters vote for the Calaveras Local Fire Protection Tax initiative, then it will be come law.
